PASSION FOR WRITING

Artistic Statement

My writing is a celebration of authentic Black and Queer experiences. As a playwright, I am constantly putting minorities at the forefront of everything I do. I aim to create spaces where minority stories can exist without the pressure and the judgment of mainstream appeal. I hope that my writing will showcase that these narratives are beautiful based on their own merits and not because they're palatable. As an artist, I constantly strive to prove that validation from the majority is not a prerequisite for impactful art.

In the past I have written young adult dramas, social commentary pieces, and an adaptation of an African American folk tale. I use my writing to create an echo chamber for the unheard. I draw upon social media, personal experiences, and my scattered imagination for inspiration. When crafting a narrative, I try to be sensitive to the content I show to African Americans. I feel there are times in art where our trauma is portrayed irresponsibly. It is my belief as a person and artist that African Americans & Queer people are multifaceted. I hope that in the future my writing can show Black people of all experiences that there is magic and beauty in our narratives, features, love, pain, defeats, and triumphs.
